An avatar can not have sex on its own. But desire has driven technology and the convention of pink and blue balls has emerged. Generally in a heterosexual sim the man clicks on a blue ball and the woman a pink, yes that is right. The balls then ask for the authority to animate your avatar and if you both say yes then you are jointly animated in to sexual actions. The same holds for dancing.
